Topic 2.11: Forced and Voluntary Migration

Essential Knowledge

Forced migrations include slavery and events that produce refugees, internally displaced persons, and asylum seekers.

Types of voluntary migrations include transnational, transhumance, internal, chain, step, guest worker, and rural-to-urban

Effects on the Origin Country
  • Brain drain: Loss of skilled workers.
  • Population decline: Especially in rural or aging regions.
  • Remittances: Migrants send money home, supporting local economies.
Effects on the Destination Country
  • Labor supply: Fills workforce gaps, often in low-wage sectors.
  • Cultural diversity: Increases cultural exchange, but may cause social tension.
  • Strain on resources: More demand for housing, healthcare, schools.
Examples
  • India & Philippines → remittances are major parts of GDP.
