Topic 4.2: Political Processes

Essential Knowledge

  • The concepts of sovereignty, nation-states, and self-determination shape the contemporary world
  • Colonialism, imperialism, independence movements, and devolution along national lines have influences contemporary political boundaries.

Sovereignty

Sovereignty is a state’s full right to govern itself without interference from other states. Maintaining sovereignty is essential to stability and political power.

Self-Determination

This is the belief that people with a shared culture have the right to form their own state. It shapes independence movements and can cause pressure on multinational states.

Historical Processes That Shaped Boundaries

• Colonialism – When one country establishes settlements and imposes political, economic, and cultural control over another territory. Colonial borders often ignored ethnic or cultural lines.

• Imperialism – Direct or indirect control of another territory, usually for economic or strategic gain. Imperialism intensified global power imbalances.

• Independence Movements – Former colonies gained independence throughout the 20th century. These movements reshaped political boundaries in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.

• Devolution Along National Lines – When internal regions gain autonomy or break apart due to cultural/national differences. Examples: breakup of Yugoslavia; creation of South Sudan.
